One Step Behind by Lauren North

Today I’m delighted to host the blog tour for One Step Behind by Lauren North

Jenna is a wife, a mother, a doctor. She’s also the victim of a stalker.

Every time she leaves her house, she sees him. Disturbing gifts are left at her door. Cruel emails are sent to her colleagues. She has no idea who this man is but she feels powerless against him. Until the day he is brought into her hospital after a serious accident, and Jenna is given the chance to find out once and for all why this man is tormenting her.

Now, the power is all hers.

But how many lines is she willing to cross to take back control of her life?

My thoughts

Well this is something I can tell you. Absolutely gripping from the very first page, Lauren has a brilliant knack of dragging you slap, bang in the middle of the tense, dark atmopshere and terror that has a hold over her characters. I remember reading her debut novel The Perfect Betrayal, the horror I felt for Tess as the story unfolded. Well Lauren sucked me right back in again, this time as I watched Jenna being stalked. Unwanted, unnerving, horrific gifts, text messages, emails and the sightings, the following, the constant feeling of being watched, of never knowing what he was going to do next. The worst thing of course not knowing who he was or why he’d chosen her. The police are offering support but are unable to do anything when they don’t know who they are looking for.

Imagine this has been going on for a year, gradually esculating, getting worse day by day, never knowing when or how it will end. Wondering what he will do to you, to your family. Then imagine being a doctor in an A&E department and this man who has been persecuting you for so long is brought in after an accident. He is there. Vulnerable. It is a brilliant basis for a story but of course there is so much more going on and plenty of characters thrown in to keep the tension and suspense heightened right to the very end. Jenna is a strong woman pushed to her very limits. Like many she is trying to juggle a family and career and Jenna pushes her just that little bit further by adding a stalker to her worries. Of course this overshadows everything but does it push her too far? Read it and find out. You’ll find no spoilers here. Second books are always tricky but Lauren brings it home superbly, she is defintely as author to watch and one I thoroughly recommend.

One Step Behind is available now in ebook and will be published in paperback and on Audiobook in September 2020.

Many thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me to take part in this Random Things Blog Tour. Thanks also to the publisher for providing me with a digital copy to read and review.
