What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson

Today I am delighted to be taking part in the blog tour for What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson.

Synopsis

When everything you love is in danger, how long can you keep running to
survive?

Life can be brutal
Winter in Idaho. The sky is dark. It is cold enough to crack bones.

Jack knew it
Jack Dahl has nothing left. Except his younger brother, Matty, who he’d die for.
Their mother is gone, and their funds are quickly dwindling, Jack needs to make a
choice: lose his brother to foster care, or find the drug money that sent his father
to prison.

So did I
Ava lives in isolation, a life of silence. For seventeen years her father, a merciless
man, has controlled her fate. He has taught her to love no one.

Did I feel the flutter of wings when Jack and I met? Did I sense the coming
tornado?

But now Ava wants to break the rules – to let Jack in and open her heart. Then she
discovers that Jack and her father are stalking the same money, and suddenly Ava
is faced with a terrible choice: remain silent or speak out and help the brothers
survive.

Looking back, I think I did . . .

Perfect for fans of Patrick Ness, Meg Rosoff and Daniel Woodrell, What Beauty There Is an unforgettable debut novel that is as compulsive as it is beautiful, and unflinchingly explores the power of determination, survival and love.

What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson is published on 8th April 2021 by Penguin books and will also be available as an ebook.
My thoughts

There is something incredibly beautiful about this novel. It is a hard-hitting, dark story but the writing is absolutely stunning and this tragic, heartbreaking story will most definitely stay with you long after you turn the final page.

I told Jack to stay away.

He’ll make you hurt, I said.

He’ll take what matters most.

He’d do it with a smile and then he’ll smoke a cigarette.

Jack didn’t listen.

But I get ahead of myself.

I go to the end when, to understand

the truth, you have to start at the beginning.

What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson

And right from the beginning there is an atmosphere that continues throughout. A darkness, a sense of foreboding. Jack is the tough yet fragile teenager, one who has already lived through such hardship and all he wants now is to cling on to his younger brother, Matty. Their relationship is so tender. All they have in the world is each other and Jack is prepared to do anything to protect that…but then Ava comes into their life. It is the relationships within this story that bring the beauty. Love is beauty and there is plenty of that within the pages of this book.

I felt this story right in the very pit of my belly. It was incredibly moving and emotive. There is an evil presence that stalks the pages of this novel. His name is Bardem and he is one of the scariest, most heinous characters I have come across for in a long, long time.

Whilst targeted at a YA audience this is one of those novels that transcends into adult fiction perfectly. It does have themes of suicide, drug abuse, murder and violence so I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to younger readers but 16+. If, like me, you find trauma and violence in a story difficult please do not be put off. A good book should make us feel, it allows us to explore feelings and emotions in a safe environment and it allows us to walk in another person’s shoes. Embrace it and allow yourself to walk alongside Jack and Ava and feel the heartbreak but also the love.

Thank you so much to the fabulous team at The Write Reads (@The_WriteReads) for inviting me to take part in this blog tour and to the lovely Penguin Books for supplying me with one of the stunning proof copies.
