Read With Me Young Readers – May 2020 Book Club Choices

Read With Me Young readers

This month I have chosen a picture book and two middle grade titles for you to choose from. Bear Shaped will be beautiful to share with young book lovers from around 3yrs up. Super Stan is perfect for middle grade readers aged 9+ who like something that makes them laugh and includes lots of cool illustrations throughout (supplied by the marvellous Chris Judge). I have also chosen The Vanishing Trick by Jenni Spangler which satisfies my desire for magic and adventure, Again it is good for ages 9+ but I feel this will be equally enticing for older readers too. This last one is hot of the press too as it has only just been published (30th April). I hope there is something here that grabs the attention of you and your young reader. I’ll be posting more information and kicking off the chat on all three titles during May. If you’d like to stay up to date with posts then be sure to subscribe to my blog via the home page..

Super Stan by Elaine Wickson and Chris Judge

All I want to do is see the total eclipse, but all MY plans are being eclipsed by my little brother Fred. He’s on a mission to stop the ocean turning into plastic and to save the prawns from drinking glitter-and he’s roped in everyone he knows . . . including me!

Read this book to find out how to be an actual superhero (even if you can’t fly and don’t wear your pants outside your trousers!). I’m going to need all the charts I can draw to sort this mess out, using recycled paper and a cardboard pen, obviously!

See how Stan copes with Fred’s plans to save the world as he charts all the ups and downs in a series of hilarious infographics in this highly visual book which is full of laugh-out-loud moments readers will love!

Super Stan is published by Oxford University Press.

Bear Shaped by Dawn Coulter-Cruttenden

Jack and Bear are the best of friends. Jack loves Bear because he makes him feel brave. But one day Bear disappears and Jack suddenly feels all alone with a big Bear-shaped hole in his heart. Word soon gets around that Bear is missing and Jack starts to receive kind messages from strangers all over the world. Then the toy bears start to arrive. Though the bears start to heal Jack’s sadness, none of them are Jack’s bear. Perhaps there is something Jack can do with them to help the other people with bear-shaped holes. . .
A beautiful story of love, loss, and moving forward, inspired by the true story of Jack and his beloved Bear.

The Vanishing Trick by Jenni Spangler

Step into a world of secrets, folklore and illusions, where nothing is as it seems and magic is at play…
Madame Augustina Pinchbeck, travels the country conjuring the spirits of dearly departed loved ones… for a price. Whilst her ability to contact ghosts is a game of smoke and mirrors, there is real magic behind her tricks too – if you know where to look.
Through a magical trade, she persuades children to part with precious objects, promising to use her powers to help them. But Pinchbeck is a deceiver, instead turning their items into enchanted Cabinets that bind the children to her and into which she can vanish and summon them at will.
When Pinchbeck captures orphan Leander, events are set into motion that see him and his new friends Charlotte and Felix, in a race against time to break Pinchbeck’s spell, before one of them vanishes forever…

The Vanishing Trick is published by Simon & Schuster Children’s Books.
