Read With Me… The Tales Before Bedtime Bookclub

I love reading. It’s one of my absolute favourite things to do and I’ve always loved the idea of belonging to a book club. The sad reality is that I never quite manage to commit to meeting up once a month and, if I’m honest, wanting to read that month’s book of choice. So I thought why not create a virtual book club right here on my website, the one place I have devoted to reading and storytelling?

So here it is… but this book club is a little bit different.

Firstly I will be suggesting three books to choose from each month. Yes I know one of the perks of a book club is picking up a book that you wouldn’t normally read. But I think it’s still good to have a choice. The books selected each month will hopefully offer a choice of length and genre. This way if you really can’t abide, for instance, SciFi, there will be another genre that may be more appealing. Likewise, you can opt for the shorter option if an epic 600 pager fills you with horror. I also think it will give more scope for interesting discussions and variability.

How can you get involved?

The Read With Me book club is open to any visitors to the Tales Before Bedtime website allowing them to participate in the discussions and enjoy relevant additional content about the authors and publishers. All I ask is that any contributions are well mannered and kind. This is a loving book site that nurtures readers and writers.

If you’d like to check out the selected titles for May then click here to go to the relevant page.

does it cost to Join?

The short answer is NO.

The long answer: I did consider charging a subscription fee but ultimately I would like this book club accessible by anyone so I have decided against charging.

However… I am trying to run my Tales Before Bedtime website ad free and so to help with my costs I am giving you kind hearted people the option to help me out with this. Think of it as buying me a cup of my favourite Earl Grey tea each month. 🙂

By making a small contribution of a monthly* amount such as £2 (or an amount chosen by you) you will enable me to carry on sharing the book love without having random ads appearing on the site (which we can all agree can be pretty irritating). You’ll also be supporting and encouraging my own writing of which I’d love to be able to publish on here too.

*This monthly contribution can be cancelled at any time without question.

What next?

Here are some frequently asked questions which I hope will answer any queries you may have but please do contact me if there is anything I haven’t covered.

Q: When will I know which books have been selected to read?

A: On the 26th of each month I will release the details of the titles we will be reading the following month – so on the 26th of April I will release the titles for May and so on.

Q: How many books am I required to read?

A: You can choose to read as many of the suggested books as you like or none at all. You are under no obligation at all.

Q: When do I need to read my chosen books by?

A: There is no pressure to read the book by any given date but I will begin discussions during the relevant month to kick things off. You can then contribute (if you’d like to) at any time after that and there isn’t a cutoff date for comments. I will also be providing reading group questions to inspire our discussions (but again you can completely ignore these).

Q: Do I have to contribute to the discussion?

A: You can contribute as much or as little as you like. Again you are under no obligation at all and can simply use the club as a place to get some reading inspiration.

Q: Are there any rules to contributing to the discussions?

A: Keep it friendly and put a big fat ‘SPOILERS!!’ alert at the top of your comment if there is anything that might give any part of the story away. Do try not to spoil other peoples enjoyment of discovering the story for themselves by warning before they read too far into your comment. Also be kind – if you didn’t enjoy the book be constructive in your comments. Always remember that one reader’s rubbish is another’s treasure AND the author is a real person. I will remove any comments that I feel are inappropriate for the site.

Q: What ‘additional content’ will be available?

A: This will differ from month to month and book to book. I will always strive to add information that I think may be of interest and add a greater relationship between you and the book. Sometimes it may be an author interview, reading or something as simple as a link to other sites or reviews of interest. I will also run giveaways and competitions from time to time.

Q: Can I suggest books to be added to the reading list?

A: Absolutely. Just send them through to me on an email and I’ll consider them. I can’t guarantee your suggestion will be selected but will try and include as many as I can.

Q: Do I have to participate every month?

A: Absolutely not. You can dip in and out as the fancy takes you.

Q: Is this book club suitable for children?

A: The books selected will be for older readers and so the content may not be suitable or accessible for younger readers. However there is a Read With Me Young Readers… Bookclub coming very soon!

Please email me at shelleyfallowsauthor@gmail.com if you have any other questions.

I do hope you’ll join me on this reading journey. 🙂
