Synopsis

A page-turning new YA thriller for the social media age, perfect for fans of

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and One Of Us Is Lying.

Ten years ago, Jess’s mother was murdered by the Magpie Man.

She was the first of his victims but not the last.

Now Jess is the star of a YouTube reality series and she’s using it to catch the

killer once and for all.

The whole world is watching her every move.

And so is the Magpie Man.

My thoughts

‘My mum was killed by the Magpie Man.’

The guy nods and I wait for him to reply.

When he doesn’t, I say, ‘Fifty-one seconds from home she was strangled to death and left to be rained on all night.’

An absolutely brilliant, gripping opening and it doesn’t let go for one second. This is an incredible debut! Oh my goodness. Vincent shows such skill in his writing and I think his choice to narrate in the first person is brilliant, it really sucks you in. There are many parts that are incredibly unnerving. As I read I was blown away by Jess’ bravery. Both her and her Dad have been living in the shadows since her mums murder ten years ago and suddenly she throws herself out in the open, taunting the her mothers killer, enticing him to come for her too. She is desperate for him to be caught. Thirteen murders is too many. One murder, the very first, her mother was too many and she will do anything to bring him to justice. I wondered how I would react if I were in her position and at times I felt terrified for her. There are many shadowy figures within the story, any one of them could be the Magpie Man. Jess does have people behind her. Her Dad, reluctantly drawn into this scheme of hers, is cautious. He doesn’t want any harm to come to Jess but he understands her reasons. Their relationship is loving and yet so heartbreaking at times. It really shows us what damage was done by the monster. Murder doesn’t just destroy one life.

This is a Young Adult novel but I really feel that anyone who loves a brilliant thriller will absolutely enjoy it. I will also be recommending it to older students in my school Library. I have a feeling they are going to LOVE it! I have to say I was blown away by this novel. I have a feeling it is going to be the MUST READ of the year.

Many thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for inviting me to take part in this blog tour.  Thanks also to the lovely people at Penguin Books for my sending me a copy to review.  This is an absolutely brilliant novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
